On Sunday evening, the annual Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols will help prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of Christmas in a unique and beautiful way. Two services will be held in Great Hall at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., both featuring a small cast of readers, our Boston Avenue Camerata singers, and members of the Tulsa Symphony. Rather than a traditional worship service that anchors around a sermon, this style of service consists of Christmas song interspersed with Scripture readings. Experiencing the musical worship elements in candlelight with the incredible acoustics of Great Hall creates a moving worship experience, with an atmosphere of reverence, mystery, and beauty.

Boston Avenue’s Music Director, Joel Panciera, says of Lessons and Carols, “ever since coming to BA in 2000, I have always loved the Lessons and Carols services. When I think back, some of the most memorable, ‘close to God’ times that I have experienced here has been during Lessons and Carols services. There’s something about how the service allows the Advent to Christmas story to slowly and powerfully unfold through prayer, scripture and song. In the silences, in the moments of identification and connection with the story – we experience God’s presence and we are changed.”

This year’s collection of carols covers the entire gamut of styles and expressions – from the ancient, to the classic and traditional, to the modern and playful, and even to a powerfully meditative piece that will pull you back to that manger in Bethlehem to experience deep peace and eternal, unending Presence.
