Fostering positive change
Community Impact Programs
At Boston Avenue UMC, we are dedicated to making a lasting impact in our community through our innovative Community Impact Programs. Collaborating with a wide network of community partners and stakeholders, these programs exemplify our commitment to putting our core values into action and creating positive change in the lives of those we serve. These initiatives represent a new and creative approach to ministry, enabling us to extend our compassion, resources, and support beyond the walls of our church.
Boston Avenue Weekday School (BAWS)
Boston Avenue Weekday School – a place where children are nurtured and loved, and families are welcomed and included!
The Boston Avenue Weekday School (BAWS) is a licensed 3-star center open Monday through Friday, with regular hours from 8:40 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
We provide a quality early education for children four months- PreK. We learn through play, age and developmentally appropriate activities, extra-curricular activities, and early faith themes! Various schedules available, from two to five days per week.
The purpose of Boston Avenue Weekday School is to offer a warm, accepting, inclusive environment where families are welcomed and the child can develop creatively and spiritually – through professional care and early education and faith opportunities. Our goal is to provide a loving and nurturing place in which children learn, play, and grow through activities designed to meet their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development needs. Each child will know they are worthy, and a beloved child of God.
The School follows the Tulsa Public Schools schedule, and classes are led by teachers trained in Early Childhood Education.

Sistema Tulsa
Sistema Tulsa Mission Statement: “To nurture community and improve young people’s lives through the practice of music.”
Sistema Tulsa is a free social change through music initiative which has had a demonstrable impact in the Tulsa community and in the lives of young people. The program engages area music teachers and partners including Tulsa Public Schools, local foundations and arts organizations.
Students receive free musical instruction, instruments, method books, snacks, and participate in creative electives. Musical ensembles – Symphony, Strings, Band, and Choir, and Orff orchestras – are the center of this program because they embody a collaborative spirit and caring community; each child is essential to the group as an individual and as a team player. The Sistema curriculum illustrates a whole-person commitment.
Over 500 students and families have been beneficiaries since 2015. Currently, Sistema Tulsa operates 5 after-school learning sites, the Main Hub at Boston Avenue and additional satellites at Grissom, Mayo, Owen, and Tisdale Fine Arts Elementary Schools.
For more information on student enrollment and opportunities for giving, contact Director Jose Luis Hernandez, at jlhernandez@bostonavenue.org or 918-699-0150 .

Smiles of Faith
A mobile clinic that provides free dental care for the north Tulsa Oklahoma community.
Smiles of Faith is an innovative project stewarded by Boston Avenue UMC, Metropolitan Baptist Church, Historic Vernon AME Church, Centenary UMC, and Morningstar Baptist Church.
The mobile dental clinic, which contains two newly remodeled modern dental exam rooms, will provide services out of each local church’s parking lot, with volunteers, a waiting room and restrooms offered from within the church. All preventative and basic dental services will be provided by a licensed dentist at no charge to the patients.
Smiles of Faith will begin providing services in August 2023. All services will be provided at no charge. If more complicated services are needed, referrals will be made to the OU School of Dentistry or local dentists.

The Tulsa Theatre Works
Tulsa Theatre Works (TTW) is a community-based theatre program that inspires, challenges, and prepares children, youth, and adults to develop their creative potential. Due to generous donor support, TTW offers high quality instruction and performances at no cost to participants.
Since 1983, Boston Avenue United Methodist Church has offered theatrical performance experiences for youth and adults through its Broadway at Boston Avenue (BABA) and BAY (Boston Avenue Youth) Troupe programs. Historically, these programs were available only to church members.
In 2021, church leaders began laying the groundwork for expansion into a year-round, community focused theatre program, open to all, in a model similar to the church’s Sistema Tulsa music program. Through studio learning, workshops, and staged productions, TTW will provide instruction in a wide spectrum of technical theatre, such as sound, lighting, set design, costuming, and direction in addition to acting, dance, and singing.
TTW Guiding Principles:
- Ensure equal access to the theatrical arts.
- Energize the spirit to face challenges head-on.
- Enjoy the creative journey while building long-lasting friendships.
- Explore big dreams and creative risks within a safe, supportive environment.
- Engaged learning environments thrive within a community invested in its success.
- Evolving organizations never arrive, but are always becoming.
