Respite Care

Special_Needs_-_Respite_Care.jpg

The Respite Care program began in the late 1970's as a support group for parents of children with disabilities. One of the parents commented that her greatest need was just an occasional break from the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week care of her special-needs child. Soon, the Respite Care program was begun!

Children with disabilities* and their typically-developing siblings are cared for by experienced staff and regular volunteers. The Jubilee Gym center provides an open space for children to move freely. A typical night includes games, books, crafts, and movement activities, then a light snack** at 8 p.m., followed by a movie at 8:30 p.m. Children may stay for all or part of the evening.

Respite Care usually meets from 6:30-10 p.m. two Friday evenings per month. The schedule varies depending on school breaks, holidays, and weather.

*Some challenges or diagnoses are out of the range of care for staff and volunteers. An assessment is made to determine if the program is the right fit for each family.

**Some families provide snacks for their children, depending on allergies or dietary restrictions.

For questions about registering your child, please contact Respite Care Coordinator Donna Sakariason at 918.289.7829, or Director of Special Needs Paula Gradney-Garner at 918.699.0128.

Special Buddy Program

One of our goals is to have children and youth with special needs interact with their peer groups as much as possible. Children and youth attend peer-level Sunday School with their trained and experienced Special Buddy volunteers or staff members. Special Buddies may use adapted curriculum when needed.

Special buddies are only available to work in pairs, or are assisted by youth Leaders in Training. We are currently seeking Special Buddies! Share your gifts by being a part of this wonderful ministry. For more information or to volunteer, contact Director of Special Needs Paula Gradney-Garner at 918.699.0128.

Volunteer and Staff Opportunities

Love working with Special Needs children and youth? We have volunteer and part-time employment opportunities available in our Respite Care and Special Buddy programs. Sunday mornings, 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.; occasional Wednesday evenings, 5:45 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.; two Friday evenings per month, 6:15 p.m. - 10 p.m.; and for other activities, as needed. Certified volunteer hours or pay $10-12 per hour, DOEE. Compassion, reliability, verifiable experience working with children are a must! All volunteers and staff must pass the OSBI background check and be willing to complete paid training throughout the year. This is a great environment for working well with children and with others! Contact Paula Gradney-Garner, Director of Special Needs, at 918.699.0128 for more information.
