During Lent ~ As the Lenten season reminds us of Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem, and ultimately to the cross, it gives each of us an opportunity to reflect on our own spiritual journey. We invite you to join us in observing Lent through regular Sunday morning worship services and through the following services:
Ash Wednesday Services ~
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 12:05 and 6:00 p.m.
We begin the 40-day period of Lent by confronting our own mortality and confessing our sins before God within the community of faith. The texts and music presented during each service is designed to focus our lives upon the dual themes of sin and death in the light of God's redeeming love in Jesus Christ. While the use of ashes as a sign of mortality and penance may be new to some, it has a significant history in Jewish and Christian worship. The imposition of ashes on our foreheads is a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation.
Palm/Passion Sunday Services ~
Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 8:30 & 11:00 a.m.
Both worship services highlight the sharp contrasts of Holy Week. We begin with a joyful reenactment of the triumphal entry that Jesus experienced as he entered Jerusalem by having our children's choirs process with palm branches; however, we soon move from songs of joy to prayers of confession as we experience the rest of the passion story.
Maundy Thursday Service ~
Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Observe our Lord's Last Supper in this poignant service with anthems by the Chancel Choir and a sermon by one of our associate ministers.
Good Friday Service ~
Friday, April 6, 2012 at 12:05 p.m.
Listen to the story of Jesus' passion on the journey to the cross told through meditations and scripture readings, interspersed with beautiful anthems and Lenten hymns in Great Hall. The orchestra, singers, and readers combine to make this a meaningful worship experience.
Easter Services ~
Sunday, April 8, 2012 at 8:00, 9:30, & 11:00 a.m.
Christ is risen! Join us to worship and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord at any of three triumphant services. Music is provided by the Chapel Choir at 8:00 and the Chancel Choir at 9:30 & 11:00. Each service includes a sermon by Dr. Mouzon Biggs, Jr.

During Summertime
Old Time July Revival ~
Sundays, July 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29, 2012 at 8:30 & 11:00 a.m.
Across the Bible-belt South, farmers and ranchers gathered for summertime revivals. Fields had been plowed, planted, weeded, and "laid by." All the farmers could do next was pray for rain and a good harvest. Each Sunday morning in July, we do our best to relive those summer revivals with great singing of your best-loved hymns (i.e. "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," "In the Garden," "Bringing in the Sheaves," "Are Ye Able," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," "The Church in the Wildwood," "He Lives," "Standing on the Promises," "Blessed Assurance," and "The Old Rugged Cross" - to name only a few!), rousing anthems (i.e. "Battle Hymn," "Beautiful River," etc.), recognition of out-of-town visitors, heartfelt prayers, and preaching that invites us all to come again to Jesus Christ our Lord. It's a great time to enjoy worshiping in a casual atmosphere - all are welcome!

Congregation enjoy old-time hymns with piano accompaniment during July Revival.

Usually held during the first weekend of Lent, the Barton-Clinton-Gordey Series features a distinguished religious speaker or scholar delivering four of his or her very best sermons. Over the years, the Series has featured a variety of outstanding speakers, including bishops, professors, Christian pastors, and Jewish rabbis.
The Series was originally established in 1963 to honor Dr. L. S. Barton, Boston Avenue's Senior Minister from 1914-1922. In 1987, the Series was also named for Dr. Fred S. Clinton, a pioneer physician who moved to Indian Territory in 1897 and helped to establish Tulsa's first chartered hospital. Then, I. V. and Bona Gordey were named to the Series in 2001. Joining Boston Avenue in 1928, Bona was a beloved Sunday School teacher, and I. V. was a member and goodwill ambassador of the Chancel Choir for over 50 years.
