2017-18 Confirmation Program
Welcome to our year of Confirmation with the 6th grade class! To help you get acquainted with our Confirmation program, check out the questions and answers below, then proceed to the tabs on the left for more information about our mid-high youth. Please contact our Director of Middle School Ministries, Debbie Peterson, 918.699.0124, if you need further information regarding our 6th grade programs.
What is Confirmation?
A year-long faith journey where our youth strengthen their commitment as a Disciple of Christ, where they have the opportunity to get an overview of their faith story as found in the Bible and in the history and tradition of the church.
What curriculum do we use?
Credo, an official resource for the United Methodist Church, is divided into three components:
Know Your Story... Confirm Your Faith... Live Your Commitment
We cover the curriculum in 18 classroom sessions. Several units are used during our fall retreat, while other weeks of the year we have visiting ministers and staff, Friends in Faith Sundays, and Parent and Youth Sundays.
When and where are classes held?
On Sunday mornings during our Sunday School hour at 9:40 a.m. on the third floor.
When do Confirmation classes begin?
Fifth graders are promoted into the youth department on Memorial Day Sunday. These newly-rising 6th graders then combine with the 7th and 8th graders during the summer for a fun and casual time to get acquainted and familiar with the youth area.
Formal Confirmation classes begin on Sunday, August 13, 2017 with a Parent and Youth Covenant Service in Rose Chapel.
What are Friends in Faith?
One way we can nurture our young people as they prepare for Confirmation is to pair them with an adult mentor. January through May, mentors and youth meet once a month during the Sunday School hour for discussion questions that fit with our curriculum. Great relationships come from these times together.
What are Parent and Youth Sundays?
Parents have a vital role to play in helping their youth grow in faith. Using our Credo Talkpoints for Parents, we provide a time for you and your Confirmand to enjoy guided conversation during the Sunday School hour. Meetings together are held five times during the school year.
When is Confirmation Sunday?
On Sunday, April 8, 2018 during the 11:00 a.m. worship service! A lunch for family, friends, and mentors will be held following the service.
How do I register?
To register for the 2017-18 Confirmation Class, please contact the education office for a complete Confirmation packet or click here to download the application and information packet.
What if I am older than sixth grade?
The curriculum is written for middle school youth. Each year, older middle school youth participate in Confirmation. After they are confirmed, they return to their grade level class. High school students would make arrangements through their department.
What other ministry opportunities are offered for a Confirmand?
Wednesday DTBA, service projects, fellowship events, small groups, acolytes, Presidential Award program, basketball, Social Justice events, Mosaic drama group, camps, and choirs. Check out our calendar to see what we're up to!
