During Christmas or Spring Break each year, college students take a mission trip to provide help to those in need.
Reading with Burroughs Elementary
Local college students are invited to help us support our long-standing relationship with Burroughs Elementary School through a reading volunteer partnership. We are asking for volunteers to commit one hour per week to go to Burroughs Elementary, located just north of downtown, to read one-on-one in the classroom. These are organized each semester to accommodate your class schedule. Please contact Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery, at 918.699.0127 about how you can help.
The Respite Care program began in the late 1970's as a support group for parents of children with disabilities. One of the parents commented that her greatest need was just an occasional break from the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week care of her special-needs child. Soon, the Respite Care program was begun!
Children with disabilities and their typically-developing siblings are cared for by experienced staff and regular volunteers. The Jubilee Gym center provides an open space for children to move freely. A typical night includes games, books, crafts, and movement activities, then a light snack** at 8 p.m., followed by a movie at 9 p.m. Children may stay for all or part of the evening.
Respite Care usually meets from 6:30-11 p.m. two Friday evenings per month. The schedule varies depending on school breaks, holidays, and weather. Respite Care will end at 10 p.m. on special event nights such as holiday parties.
If working with special-needs children is of interest to you, this might be the perfect place to plug in! Please contact our Director of Special Needs, Paula Gradney-Garner, at 918.699.0128 to learn how you can get involved.
