Sunday School for Infants through 5th Graders
Sunday School is a priority for the Children’s Department at Boston Avenue. Beginning with Infants, age-appropriate materials and methods are used to help even our youngest ones become aware of God’s great love for them and the fundamentals of the Christian faith.
"I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" - Isaiah 43:19
In Fall 2008, Boston Avenue set out "to do a new thing" called Faith Academy. Since then, it has made Boston Avenue the place to be on Sunday mornings!
What is Faith Academy?
What is Faith Academy? Faith Academy is an integrated program that incorporates Christian education, music, and worship for children ages four through fifth grade. Every Sunday morning from 9:40 until noon, children engage in a variety of activities and team-taught classes. Preschool classes meet on the first floor of the Children’s Building and Elementary classes meet on the second floor. Child care and enrichment sessions are also available for Infants through Preschoolers from 8 a.m. until noon.
Faith Academy consists of three components:
- Worship ~ Through the integration of scripture, prayers, and music, children learn what it means to participate in a worship service and what it means to be a leader in worship. They share in leading parts of the service, sing songs of praise, read scripture, hear God's word, and pray the Lord's Prayer.
- Faith Formation ~ Children engage in a variety of experiences that further their learning of scripture and growth as faithful Christians. They explore Bible Stories through: cooking in the Diner, playing games in the Park, watching videos in the Theater, using puppets in BATV, making arts and crafts in the Art Room, and doing experiments in the Science Lab. - Faith Expressions ~ Children learn and perform a wide variety of songs that reinforce the same lessons they study in Faith Formation classes. Music is used to teach the Bible, to create sacred experiences, and to help children develop the confidence and skill to express their faith. These various Academy choirs sing during "big church" at 11:00 a.m. and for other special services periodically throughout the year. Click here to learn more about our children's music program.
Sign-In and Pick-Up
The Young Children’s Sunday School area has greeters in the hallways. Each Sunday School classroom has a sign-in sheet outside the doorway of the classrooms for children Infant through Kindergarten.
Pagers are available in the hallway for parents of the younger children. They are silent pagers that will alert parents anywhere in the church facility that their child needs them.
Each age-level classroom on the second floor has a sign-in sheet and greeter outside the doorway. Please make sure your child is signed in. Greeters send welcome cards, birthday cards, and “we missed you” cards. Please pick up your child promptly.

Boston Avenue’s rotational Sunday School model, is a spiritual journey from past to future for First through Fifth Graders. Instead of graded classrooms, "stations" are set up in the Sunday School rooms. Each week the children rotate to a different station where they explore the scriptures in creative ways. Instead of introducing a new scripture each week, children work with the same Bible story for several weeks in a row, allowing the story to be reinforced in their memories.
Crossroads has ten stations, each with leaders who have gifts and interests in that particular area. The stations include a theater room, an arts and crafts room, a diner for cooking, BATV for acting out Bible stories, a science room for exploring, a worship room, and a park for large motor activities.
This rotational model was created on the premise that different people learn in different ways. This model has been extremely effective, as evidenced both in the children’s enthusiasm for learning and in their retention of the information learned. And... it’s fun!
