United Methodist Women

What is United Methodist Women?

United Methodist Women (UMW) is a group of women within the congregation organized for and committed to mission. We are women like you: women, who are employed, not employed, housewives, businesswomen, single, married, divorced, widowed, young, middle-aged, and older women. Worldwide, we number approximately one million members and raise nearly $25 million each year for programs and projects related to women, children, and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world.

What does it mean to be a member of UMW?

A member is one who believes in the purpose of UMW and chooses to participate in the various activities and programs of the organization. At Boston Avenue Church, we have a number of small groups, called circles, which meet monthly. All members of these circles are part of the Boston Avenue Unit of United Methodist Women which relates directly to district and conference organizations and to the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

Regular UMW Programs at BA

At Boston Avenue, UMW circles meet once a month to study together, support each other in mission, foster spiritual growth, develop leaders, and advocate for justice. In keeping with our diverse membership, some circles meet during the day, some in the evening, some at the church, and some in members' homes. Please call Margie Herndon at 918.742.6792 or Dolores Ritter at 918.492.6978 to help find a circle that is right for you!

In addition to study and mission work, our Unit hosts an annual membership tea each September.

UMW Missions at BA

The Boston Avenue Unit of UMW is focused on missions of both a local and global scale. We support several area missions, such as the Cookson Hills Center near Tahlequah, the United Methodist Children’s Home in Tahlequah, and the Boys’ Ranch in Gore, through volunteering and donating resources.

Many have also come to explore the beauty of our friendships while enjoying the beauty of the Frances E. Willard Ministry Center in Tulsa. A home for girls for many years, the Center now hosts retreats, workshops, and the Circle of Care Child S.H.A.R.E. program. The property extends 40 acres, all the way back to the edge of Gilcrease Museum. The Willard Center offers miles of walking trails, as well as a lovely pond - sure to delight anyone who loves to fish!

To the Woman:

  • who finds meaning in her church and is drawn to its fellowship,
  • who wants to combine fellowship with study, worship, and outreach opportunities,
  • who feels she has gifts that are to be shared with others,
  • who seeks a supportive community to affirm her own sense of purpose and commitment to God...

UMW invites you to:

"grow spiritually through worship, Bible Study and prayer, celebrate the person you are becoming in Jesus Christ, develop meaningful and lasting relationships, share who you are and your gifts, take action and make a difference in your community and the world."
