Broadway at
Boston Avenue
(BABA)
Just as, according to legend, the village of Brigadoon emerges from the mist in Scotland at regular intervals, a Broadway musical has emerged at Boston Avenue Church every summer since 1983. Although not the first church in Tulsa to incorporate a drama ministry in its programs, BABA is the longest running series of its kind in our city. One reason for its success and longevity is careful planning and a clear mission.

Providing an intergenerational venue for church members of all ages has been a guiding rationale for the program. The summer musical offers children, youth, and adults the opportunity to be engaged in an activity as equals, with everyone working for an experienced director. Some of the best-known names in community theatre have directed productions at Boston Avenue, but those on stage are church members only.
High quality musical theater experiences offer members the opportunity to share their talents and develop new skills. As performers, they must create well-defined characters and employ self-discipline.
Participants often return to the program year after year because they have tasted spiritual creativity and have enjoyed it.

BAY Troupe is a thriving group of mid-high and senior-high thespians who are interested in the dramatic arts. These gifted youth have performed many successful productions during the past few years including: Miracle on 34th Street, Godspell, Fiddler on the Roof, The Cotton Patch Gospel, Big, Into the Woods, Annie, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and, most recently, Barnum. All Boston Avenue youth are encouraged to participate!
For 2010, BAY Troupe has been divided into two parts: a Senior High show in the fall and a Mid-High show in the spring. Rehearsals are primarily on Sunday afternoons from 12:30-3:30, and leads/soloists also rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6:45-9, although not all cast members are required to be at every rehearsal. The Fall Troupe is directed by Angelyn Dale and Dr. Joel Panciera, and the Spring Troupe is directed by Rev. Mary Ann Emmons and Joan Hatley. Youth directors Audra Fogle and Debbie Peterson serve as “Producers” for this ministry.
