Special Activities for Children at BA
Special events for Kindergarteners through 5th Graders are held quarterly at Boston Avenue. These events include swimming parties, picnics, lock-ins, and hayrides. Details on each event are publicized as dates draw closer.
Events for Families with Children are held through the year. Retreats, parenting classes, the Advent Workshop, carnivals, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Downtown Hoe-Down are just a few of the events in which your family can participate.
Older Elementary Sexuality Seminar: Each Spring, Older Elementary children and their parents are invited to participate in the United Methodist Church’s Sexuality Seminar. This seminar helps open the lines of communication between parents and children in an easy and comfortable manner. Registration is limited and fills up fast. Watch for publicity!
Mission Projects: All of our children’s classes participate in mission by making gifts for our missionaries to take on their trips, donating items, and going to mission sites. Each class will “adopt” a missionary, learn about their travels, and how we all help in missions.
“MISSION ON THE MOVE”
Boston Avenue's four-day mission camp that runs concurrently with Vacation Bible School during the summer and involves four Mornings of Community Service for rising 5th-6th Graders;
Youth and leaders meet each day in the South Parking Lot outside of Jubilee Hall where they travel to places like the Tulsa Community Food Bank, Methodist Manor, and Daycenter for the Homeless. They participate in service projects designed with our 5th and 6th graders in mind. This is a great time of fellowship and learning to serve others. Youth are welcome to have their friends enroll with them for these four days of service to the community. Advanced registration is required since we need to reserve transportation. An Open House is held for everyone on the last night of the Mission and features a video of each day's project.
Scouting Awards: Our church participates in the Scouting program providing leadership for the various awards. Awards are scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Summer Events: Night Owl Camp, Vacation Bible School, Older Elementary Camp, and much more! Our summer is filled with wonderful opportunities for children of all ages. A separate brochure with registration information is mailed to children in early Spring.
Respite Care: Held on the second and fourth Friday of each month from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. to give parents of children with disabilities a “time off”. Call 699.0140 for information.
Childcare: Childcare is offered during Sunday morning worship and for most other activities and meetings at the church; advanced reservations are needed for times other than Sunday morning. Please call the office at 699.0121 for more information or to make reservations.
Children and Worship: Third Graders and older are invited to attend worship in the sanctuary. Special children’s bulletins are provided. We also have opportunities for Children’s Vespers, Service of the Bells on Christmas Eve, and teaching moments on worship. Extended Sessions are offered for younger children which includes Children’s Chapel time for Kindergarteners through Second Graders.
Activity-Centered Midweek Program
for Elementary Children
L.I.F.E. Groups (Living In Faith Everyday)
Children are living in the world every day. Help them live in faith every day!
In L.I.F.E. Groups, children connect their Christian Faith with real life. Children enjoy crafts, projects, games, and even preparing snacks to share with friends. Each week children apply what’s being learned by completing a “Weekly Challenge.” This challenge is often a service project to be completed at home, so children learn to serve others in a practical way! Please contact Reverend EvaMarie Herndon Campbell at 699.0120 for more information.
Boston Avenue and Burroughs Elementary,TOGETHER!
Boston Avenue United Methodist Church is participating in the Partners in Education program through the Tulsa Public Schools. Our partner school is John Burroughs Elementary School, located at 1924 North Cincinnati in Tulsa. There are approximately 382 children in the program. Boston Avenue is blessed to make a significant difference in the lives of these children and teachers!
How can I help?
A few ways you can be involved and touch the life of a child include the following:
• Read to a child – even 30 minutes a week will make a significant difference.
• Participate in Quarterly Beautification events.
• Provide classroom supplies for a teacher.
• Provide and deliver seasonal Teacher Appreciation gifts.
• Be on the Boston Avenue & Burroughs Committee.
• Provide financial resources.
Please contact Reverend EvaMarie Herndon Campbell at 699.0120 for more information on how you can get involved.
