2017 Steering Committee Descriptions (Alphabetical Listing)
The steering committees of the Boston Avenue Church are briefly described below in terms of time commitment and purpose to give you a better idea of the way(s) in which members are being asked to serve. If you have further questions about a committee, you may call the staff coordinator for that committee (name listed in parenthesis) at the church, 918.583.5181.
Administrative Board (Rev. David Wiggs)
Governing body of the church; dinner meeting usually held on the last Tuesday of each month, August-November and January-May. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 7:00. Please call the church by noon the Monday before each meeting to make dinner reservations.
Adult Council (Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
Responsible for all of Adult Education. They meet to plan all adult discipleship classes and small groups including Bible Study and to recruit and train leaders for those classes and groups.
Altar Flower Committee (Belynda Clanton)
Members meet once during Advent and once before Easter to help decorate the sanctuary. Members also make calls regarding weekly altar flowers.
Altar Guild (Dr. Joel Panciera)
Members responsible for care and preparation of the altars in the sanctuary and chapel each Sunday – candles & lighters, paraments, etc. They also serve as greeters for funerals. Three work days per year.
Barnum Committee (Rev. EvaMarie Campbell, Debbie Peterson, Paula Gradney-Garner & Jennifer Solis)
Meets as needed to determine the distribution of earnings from the Susan Barnum Endowment for children and youth.
Barton, Clinton, Gordey Committee (Rev. David Wiggs)
Meets as needed to select speakers for this annual lecture series.
Boy Scout Committee (Director of Welcoming Ministries)
Meets quarterly This committee meets to strengthen the relationship between the church and our scout families and troop. They also help oversee and coordinate troop activities.
Budget Committee (Rev. David Wiggs, Brenda Reed)
Meets late afternoons, August - October, to prepare next year's church budget and present it to the Administrative Board. Usually meets on the same Tuesday as Administrative Board.
Building Committee (Rev. David Wiggs, Brenda Reed)
Meets at 11:00 a.m. on same Tuesday Administrative Board meets to advise regarding the church building needs. Members also work on subcommittees for specific building-related projects.
Care Ministries (Rev. Amy Venable)
Care Ministry meets as needed to deal with prayer ministry and cards and calling.
Children’s Council (Rev. EvaMarie Campbell, Paula Gradney-Garner)
Meets quarterly and as needed to nurture the faith development of and provide special events for children and their families. All members are expected to serve on at least one event per year. Adult class representatives will report Children’s Council events to their Adult Sunday school classes.
Communications Committee (Hayley Wheeler)
Meets occasionally as needed to enhance communication within the congregation and greater Tulsa community. Members serve as consultants as communications needs and/or questions arise.
Communion Stewards (Brenda Reed)
Members prepare elements for Communion services on designated Sundays, Vesper Communion, and special services (Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday). Preparation is usually done on the Saturday before.
COMPassion Committee (Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
This committee meets as needed to help plan meals and coordinate volunteers, transportation, and the worship experience for our COMPassion dinner and worship, which occur every other Thursday night. The committee also helps promote and recruit volunteers from BAUMC congregation and from our guests who come to participate and since have become members of the church.
Confirmation Youth Leadership Team (Debbie Peterson)
Members meet as needed to plan and oversee the Confirmation Youth curriculum, fellowship and service projects for the year. Members are ex-officio of Mid-High Youth Advisory Team.
Council on Special Needs and Deaf & Hard of Hearing (Paula Gradney-Garner)
Meets as needed throughout the school calendar year. The role of the Council is to identify areas of opportunity to help the church become more inclusive and accessible to our current and prospective members and guests. The Council will also host, create, and assist with programming, volunteer recruitment, activities and events which reach out to families within our church and in the community to participate fully in the life of the church including worship, study, mission, and other church activities. (ex: Special Buddies, Respite Care, Disability Awareness Sunday, and others).
Early Childhood (Patty Banes & Paula Gradney-Garner)
Meets as needed to discuss the needs and special activities for students at The Weekday School and their families as well as the Young Children's Department of the Church.
Environmental Advocacy Committee (Rev. Amy Venable)
Explore practical ways our members can be good stewards of the earth God has given us and recommend small and big steps we might take.
Finance Committee (Rev. David Wiggs, Brenda Reed)
Meets at 5:30 p.m. on the same Tuesday Administrative Board meets to advise the board on use of church assets.
History and Archives Committee (Brenda Reed)
Meets the first Monday morning of each month to preserve and display church history. Members are given responsibility for specific areas – music, adult or children’s classes, etc.
Investment Committee (Rev. David Wiggs, Brenda Reed)
Meets as necessary to consult on church investments.
Lay Leadership (Nominating) Committee (Rev. David Wiggs)
Meets in the fall to nominate church members to committees for the coming year.
Mid-High Youth Advisory Team (Debbie Peterson)
Meets quarterly to encourage middle school youth on their faith journeys and to plan special events for youth and their families. Members may serve on committees within the team and are asked to sign-up to help with yearly events.
Music & Arts Committee (Dr. Joel Panciera)
Meets periodically to provide support and counsel to the Director of Music and the music staff.
Senior High Youth Action Team (Jennifer Solis)
Meets each spring and fall to support high school youth on their faith journeys and to plan special events for youth and their families. Members may serve on committees within the team.
College & Young Adult Council (Jennifer Solis)
Meets as needed to plan and oversee education, fellowship and mission opportunities for young adults ages 18-24. Members may serve on committees within the council in order to be able to plan for the diverse needs of the College and Young Adult Department.
Sistema Tulsa Advisory Council (Jose Luis Hernandez)
An advisory body of caring and expert individuals connected to BAUMC and community-at-large endeavors appointed by the BAUMC Senior Pastor to serve in relationship building, advocacy, fundraising, and other mentoring capacities to the Sistema Tulsa program.
Sports & Health Ministry (Director of Welcoming Ministries)
Meets quarterly. The purpose of this committee is to focus on the healthy development of the mind, body and soul to help people grow as disciples and build relationships with each other.
Staff-Parish Relations Committee (Rev. David Wiggs)
Meets as needed, at least quarterly, to deal with personnel issues.
Tour Guide Committee (Hayley Wheeler)
Members serve on a rotating basis on Sundays to give tours of the building after the 11:00 a.m. worship service. They may also be called during the week as needed to give tours, if available.
Trustees (Rev. David Wiggs, Brenda Reed)
Meet as needed and are responsible for risk management and gifts of real estate.
Visual Arts Committee (Debbie Peterson)
Work with worship and pastoral team to provide creative elements for the church that can enhance worship series and seasonal holidays. Committee will meet as needed.
Welcoming Ministries Committee (Director of Welcoming Ministries)
Meets every other month from 5:45-7:00pm. This working committee will: identify ways to be a blessing to the community and reach out beyond our church walls, welcome all who visit Boston Avenue for worship and other events and activities, put systems and people in place to help our new members and visitors get connected beyond Sunday mornings.
Work Area on Church and Society (Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
Meets September-May on the second Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. to challenge its church members to work actively in areas of important social concern and develops resources to inform, motivate and train our community on the issues of social justice.
Work Area on Education (Rev. EvaMarie Campbell, Debbie Peterson, Paula Gradney-Garner, & Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
Meets as needed to review the education ministry to all age levels, and for specific projects.
Work Area on Interfaith Concerns (Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
Meets on the third Wednesday of each month (September – May) from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. to promote respect, cooperation, and understanding among differing faith groups. Works to support the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice (OCCJ), the spring Interfaith Trialogue Series, Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry (TMM) programs, and special interfaith activities connected with Boston Ave UMC.
Work Area on Missions (Rev. Sara Pugh Montgomery)
Meets ten times a year to oversee missions outreach, including foreign and domestic missions, local mission, and annual projects like July Mission Emphasis Month and Lights On for Cookson. Members also serve on one of three subcommittees: Local Missions, International Missions, or Finance.
